There is more to a good night's sleep than just a sturdy bed. A crisp, comforting bed sheet, comforters for warmth, and soft pillow are all necessities. Bedding refers to the materials laid above the mattress of a bed for warmth. A bed sheet is a large cotton or linen cloth used to cover a mattress and sleep on. It comes in two main varieties - flat or fitted. A flat bed sheet is simply a rectangular sheet of cloth, while a fitted bed sheet has its four corners sewn fitted with elastic. Bed sheets were traditionally white, but now come in various colors and patterns. Blankets, comforters and other bed covers are then placed on top of the second bed sheet.
A comforter is also known as a duvet. There are different kinds of comforters, often categorized by whether their fill is natural or synthetic. The synthetic filled ones, like polyester and cotton blend comforters, are popular because they are versatile and reasonably priced. They come in a huge variety of colors, prints and styles. Some of the most popular natural filled types are silk filled, which at one time used to be reserved only for Asian nobility. Today, people appreciate and prefer them for their lightweight and warmth. Some see them as an alternative to down filled comforters where the down sometimes shifts. Wool filled comforters are made from llama and alpaca wool. They are toasty warm, allergy free, and are usually covered in 100% cotton.
Down comforters are widely considered to be the height of luxury bedding. These are made from the insulating tufts of feathers from the undercoats of various waterfowl, like ducks and geese. The tufts originally serve to trap warm air next to the bird's skin. It keeps warm air in and colder air out. For the ultimate in luxury, its pure eider down comforters made from eider duck down. Spotting a good down comforter can be tricky, but luckily there are a few features to look for that signify a good purchase. The fill power number signifies how many cubic inches of space the down will take up. The more fill and loft, the more air it will trap and the warmer it will be. Up to 600 signifies good quality, with 800 ore more being very rare and expensive. Look for "baffle box construction" or words with "baffle" in the description, which indicates superior manufacturing quality for the fluffiest down possible.
