Furniture Buying Guide - Lighting
On the brighter side...
Lighting plays a crucial role in the house as it has a vast impact, from ambience to highlighting displays or artwork prominently to adding warmth and elegance to each room. Gone are the days when the primary function of a light in a room was to illuminate it with a central ceiling light. Shopping for lights, lighting fixtures, floor lamps, bathroom lamps or chandeliers can be an overwhelming experience with the extent of choices in shapes, sizes, materials and colors available today. The focus has indeed shifted from only utility to prominence for aesthetics as well.

Lighting can be classified into three types: general, task and accent. General lighting also known as ambient lighting provides overall illumination to help us see and walk about safely. This can be achieved through ceiling or wall mounted fixtures, chandeliers, recessed or track lights and lanterns outside the home. Task lighting helps you perform specific tasks such as reading, cooking, playing etc. It can be achieved through recessed and track lighting, pendant lighting and portable lamps. This should be bright enough to prevent eyestrains and free from shadows or glares. Accent lighting adds a dramatic effect to a room through visual emphasis. It can be used to spotlight a sculpture or painting or highlight a wall. Accent lighting requires at least three times more than the general light on the focal point. This can be achieved with track, recessed or wall mounted fixtures.
Lamps that have a circular or rectangular base with a straight pillar coming from the center with a light bulb on top and can be placed on a small surface such as a desk are called desk lamps. They generally have a shade that can tilt to help direct the light. They either have a rotational switch or pull chord to turn it off and on. The early 1990s saw a new, cool lamp style, made of metal and controlled by tapping the body. It is still popular today, as it is easier to tap the base of a lamp than to fumble around for the switch or chain.
Bathroom lights that flatter you are the ones that are right for you. They should be bright, clear, do not change color and must be shadow-free. They must illuminate the bathroom well enough for applying makeup, grooming, shaving etc. Fixtures should be of good quality (since bathrooms fog up) and easy to maintain. In small bathrooms, mirror lights will brighten up the entire area, but in the larger bathrooms, an additional ceiling fixture is needed for general lighting. On chilly morning, a recessed infrared heat lamp will give you added warmth as well. The best option is incandescent light fixtures or bulbs as they are closest to natural sunlight.
Whatever your lighting needs, Total Bedroom Furniture has what is right for you, and offers only the best in quality and price.
