Metal beds first made their appearance in the early 18th century as bed frames of cast iron, but their appeal has managed to transcend time and is still quite strong today. Bed frames are typically made out of wood or metal, and they serve to position the mattress a little higher off the floor, for various reasons.

Total Bedroom Furniture, a recognized leader in the US for top quality bedroom furniture and accessories, has a collection of metal beds, wrought iron beds, solid metal bed frames and many more, to offer unmatched elegance. Our metal beds are manufactured from genuine or plated brass, cast zinc or aluminum, and steel or iron, are so solidly built that they can last generations. An indication of their quality is reflected in some metal beds and metal bunk beds that come with a 10-year manufacturer's warranty.

The bed frame is typically made up of head, foot, and side rails. Metal beds come in various sizes, including Twin, Full, Queen, King, and Cal King. In the US, Twin is also known as Single (38" x 75"), Full as Double (53" x 75"), Queen as Queen-size (60" x 80"), King as Eastern King (76" x 80") and Cal King as California King (72" x 84"). Cal King size beds, generally for tall people, are typically 12" wider than a Queen-size bed and 4" longer. Most Full beds, as well as all Queen, King, and Cal King beds, require some type of center support rail, typically also with extra feet extending down to the floor.

The traditional Victorian style (antique) wrought iron bed frames were originally hand made long before the modern metalworking machinery was available. The word "wrought" means "shaped," and the shaping is almost always done by hand, making no two metal beds the same. In 550 B.C., cast iron was considered a modern method of ironwork and was first used by the Chinese. Raw iron is melted and poured like hot lava into cast molds allowing for more consistency in design. These two options are for the collector who prefers an antique. While this is a great option, you may have to deal with very-hard-to-find bed frames and odd sized mattresses and box springs. As with any antique, the heirloom piece may have taken on slight damage throughout the years. Since the term wrought really means hand made, the styles and blacksmith techniques are pretty much the same. If you are looking for a brand new antique reproduction wrought iron bed, this is top notch.

There is just no substitute for the hand-forged design from a skilled craftsman with a taste for art and fashion. But antique reproductions of cast iron and steel beds are more popular now than wrought iron beds because they are far more efficient to make and much more affordable. Today there are power injection molds (that allow for fine detail in the decorating of headboard, footboards, canopy beds and daybeds) and casting machinery. Typically, the spindles and the four bedposts are made by melting raw iron and adding other elements to create steel, the same material used in skyscrapers and cars. Steel melted into flat sheets is then cut and rolled into tubing. Cast iron is used to make the decorative castings and steel is typically used to make the four bedposts and spindles. You will also see a lot of metal beds that have straight, clean lines and are made entirely of steel. Be sure to pay special attention to the gauge of the steel in order to determine the quality of the bed frame.
