Knowing your wood is of utmost importance when shopping for a wooden bed. Wood type, the right finish and style will define the character of your bedroom and in turn reflect your own personality. Today there are plenty of options in types of beds to choose from - platform, canopy, sleigh, classic, wood, metal and leather. Most of these are available in wood, metal and leather. Add to that different styles (formal, traditional, contemporary, transitional, and country) and you are spoilt for choice.

Total Bedroom Furniture, a recognized leader in the US for top quality bedroom furniture and accessories, offers a wide range of quality beds at incredible prices.

For instance, a wood platform bed gives the bedroom a neat and elegant look. A platform bed has a raised, flat, hard surface that does not need a box spring and only a mattress will suffice. A rich wood finish gives you a feeling of being one with nature. On the other hand, a wooden canopy bed or four-post bed adds a touch of class, giving a traditional twist to the decor. The four posts are connected together by rods at the top to form a canopy. Gorgeous fabrics are usually draped over the entire bed. It is generally found in wood, iron, and wood/iron. A wood canopy bed includes the headboard, footboard, canopy and bed rails. Open toe beds are unique beds where the footboard consists of decorative post or sets of posts in each corner and the foot of the bed is open. A sleigh bed comes in a sleigh-like form that gives a classic look to the bedroom. The headboard of this bed is larger than its footboard and both are curved with their tops rolling outwards. These beds lend a fabulous look to the bedroom. Wooden bunk beds' designs have got more innovative with the times. Sometimes, the lower beds adapt to even accommodate study tables and storage. These make for wonderful space savers in children's bedroom.

Wooden beds can come in mahogany, oak, cherry, pine, maple, walnut or rosewood. These also come in colors ranging from black, dark (medium, light) to natural wood finish. Wood can generally be divided into two types: hardwood and softwood. A wood bed frame from hardwoods like cherry, maple, dark walnut, hickory, pecan and oak are preferred, while softwoods like conifers, cedar, fir, pine, and redwood are used as structural lumber. When on the lookout for a wood bed, you will hear terms like natural, cappuccino, black and others. This means the bed is made of strong particleboard or wood, and painted or otherwise altered to look different. This offers you many options to go with your existing decor.

Alder is characterized by its straight grain and even texture. Its reddish brown color often looks similar to Cherry. Unfortunately it dents relatively easily, but offers a stable surface. Cherry is moderately heavy, hard and strong. Red in color, it is smooth and resistant to abrasion. Soft maple is considered a paint grade because of minor mineral streaking, medium density, hardness and strength. Machining and finishing properties are good with a fine texture. Hard maple is considered stain grade because it is more consistent in color than its cousin soft maple. It is dense and light, whereas red oak is very hard, heavy, and strong, but fairly easy to work with in terms of density, as it turns, carves, and bends well, and sanding, finishing, and stability are excellent. Pine is lightweight with straight grain and fine, even texture, and is dimensionally stable and durable. Knots are prevalent in this material, giving it a rustic look.

Wood beds come in various sizes, including Twin, Full, Queen, King, and Cal King. In the US, Twin is also known as Single (38" x 75"), Full as Double (53" x 75"), Queen as Queen-size (60" x 80"), King as Eastern King (76" x 80") and Cal King as California King (72" x 84"). Cal King size beds, generally for tall people, are typically 12" wider than a Queen-size bed and 4"longer.

Total Bedroom Furniture has directly partnered with over 45 leading brand names in furniture manufacturing (including Fashion Bed Group, Hillsdale Furniture, Iron Beds of America, Accent Specialty, Powell, Old Adirondack, and many more), to offer the best in quality and price for wood beds.
